“Stromaufwärts” means moving against the flow of the familiar. Listening against the current. Tangible resistance. Obstacles are overcome. Curiosity awakens…
The rivers Frutz, Ill and Frödisch shape the Vorarlberg region – in terms of landscape, history and culture. As a leitmotif, they stand for regional identity and a connection to the earth, authenticity, but also for dynamism, branching, confluence, connection and the flow of energy.
Just as watercourses with their own distinct character meet, flow into one another and influence each other, so too do different sonic languages, aesthetic positions and compositional styles interact in this concert series.
New music – predominantly from Vorarlberg – appears here not as a self-contained style, but as a living tapestry: fragmentary and concentrated, resistant, permeable, experimental and sensual.
“Stromaufwärts” simultaneously refers to the source: to the essential, the reduced, the as yet unformed. Listeners are invited to embrace uncertainty, to hear the familiar anew and to make room for the unexpected.
